Overwhelmed

Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. – Ps. 61:1-2 David was overwhelmed. His son, Absalom had not only rejected him, but he had taken the throne from David. The son he loved was treating him like an enemy. We get overwhelmed too, and it doesn’t take that much to do it. One of those days where everything goes wrong can be overwhelming. Dealing with children and trying to pay the bills can beat us down, especially when you are a single mom. Taking care of aging parents when their health fails can overwhelm us. A busy schedule, a health crisis, a home repair, a car repair, a demanding job…all of which can become overwhelming, but we can...

Witness During Suffering

And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” -Luke 23:43 No one has suffered greater than our Lord when He was nailed to a wooden cross to die for our sins. Yet, during His ordeal, He took the time and the strength to assure the thief on the cross of his salvation. Jesus had been severely beaten, bruised and wounded. His body was traumatized, but He made the effort to speak. I thought about what it took just for Him to speak. He was in so much agony and every breath was difficult. We can learn from our Lord’s selfless actions. We can witness to others during our trials. I never cease to be amazed when I hear a believer proclaiming the mercies of God rather than complaining about their situation. It blesses my heart to...

Tears

You number my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle; Are they not in your book? Ps. 56:8 This is one of those verses that show us how intensely God cares about us. He knows about every wandering and every tear. If God had a bottle with our tears in it, what would we see in that bottle? Would we see the tears shed over sin and failure? How many tears would there be for the lost? How many of those tears were shed during prayer? During praise? During testimony? We would see tears shed during great struggles and afflictions, and we would remember that God poured His strength into us and brought us through that time. There would be tears marking the times when we grew in grace and knowledge. There would be only a few tears when we felt the peace that is beyond...

Goodness and Mercy

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. –Ps. 23:6 There have been many friends in my life. Some have abandoned me while others have just drifted away, but there were always two who never left my side – Goodness and Mercy. There was a time in my life when I did not recognize them, but looking back, I can see where they helped me. I did not deserve them, and there were many times when I did not appreciate them, but in spite of that they were always there. Goodness and Mercy have carried my burdens when they were too heavy for me to bear. Goodness and Mercy come in the form of grace when I am troubled., and strength when I am weak. Even when I fail, they stick with me. When I cry, they...

Provider And Protector

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. –Ps. 23:5 A shepherd, like David, would take the sheep to the plateaus for summer. This area is often called “the table lands”. The shepherd makes several trips to the table lands to prepare it for his flock. He must clean out their water holes which may be full of debris. He searches for poisonous plants in order to remove them before the sheep arrive. He leaves deposits of salt and minerals in various places for the sheep to enjoy. He learns where predators can hide waiting to attack the sheep. It is necessary to anoint the sheep’s head with oil in order to protect them from parasites and disease. Unprotected sheep will jerk their head frantically trying...

Fear No Evil

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. –Ps. 23:4 Jesus, our Good Shepherd, walks with us as we travel through the perilous vallies of life, and even at the time of death. Shepherds, like David, would guide their flock up through the valley to the high country during summer. There were good grazing areas and fresh running streams for the flocks there. There were also many dangers such as coyotes and bears hiding on the cliffs ready to attack. The shepherd stayed very close to thee flock, searching for these dangers. The sheep have no reason to fear because he is with them. The rod was a symbol of authority, protection, strength, intimacy and care. It was...
