Grace and Guidance

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters. –Ps. 23:2

This verse has the aroma of peace. What could be more peaceful than lying in a green pasture by a still moving stream with your Shepherd watching over you? It is not a rapid river, nor is it a stagnate pond. Bible margin notes call it “waters of rest”, which is understandable since the flock is able to lie down and rest. Even when the storms arise, there is still peace because Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd, is in complete control.
The green pastures and still waters provide an abundant grazing area for the sheep. The shepherd does not give his flock a dry barren area to search for food. God provides His sheep with all they need, not only food, but jobs and homes. Christians are able to graze upon the scriptures; growing in grace and drawing near to their Shepherd. Just as food and water are essential for physical survival, daily Bible study and prayer are essential for a Christian’s spiritual sustenance.
Finally, the shepherd leads his flock. “The sheep follow Him, for they know His voice.” (John 10:4). The Good Shepherd leads His sheep directing them onto the paths He wants them to go. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6).
How can we doubt the outcome of our trials when our Shepherd cares for us so graciously? Let us stay on His path, following Him and enjoying the peace that is beyond understanding.
